The failure most riders meet first has nothing to do with phones being fragile. Apple puts the iPhone's designed ambient operating range at 0 to 35 °C (32 to 95 °F), and its temperature guidance names "GPS tracking or navigation in a car" in hot conditions or direct sunlight as an activity that might change how the device performs — and a bicycle stem in the sun is the same thermal problem without the in-car qualifier. If the interior temperature does exceed that normal range, Apple's documented result is blunt: the display dims or goes black, charging slows or stops, and the cellular radio drops into a low-power state. That middle one matters most, because the usual fix for a draining phone is a power bank in the top-tube bag — and an overheating phone can refuse to take the charge.

Rain is the second one, and less settled than a spec sheet suggests. Apple lists IP67 under IEC standard 60529 for a number of iPhone models — a lab test at a maximum depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. The line underneath is the one riders skip: splash, water and dust resistance "are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear", and liquid damage is not covered under warranty. A rating a new phone earned in a lab is not a promise about your three-year-old phone on an exposed descent in a downpour.
Then there is the vibration story, repeated in bike-computer comparisons with more confidence than it deserves. Read that as three positions on one line, not a scoreboard. The phone gives you the richest map and the worst hardware situation.
