Five decisions actually separate one bike computer from another: where its position comes from (its own GPS receiver, or your phone relaying it), whether you can read it in direct sun, how it mounts and releases, how long it runs against your longest ride, and whether it talks to training sensors — and mostly it is that last one you are paying for. Decision 1: its own GPS, or your phone doing the locating
This one decides what happens on your worst ride, not your best. A standalone computer carries a GNSS receiver and finds itself from the satellites overhead — Garmin's Edge line and Wahoo's ELEMNT line both work that way, which is why they keep navigating when your phone is off, flat, or buried in a saddlebag. A tethered computer has no receiver; it takes position and route from your phone over Bluetooth and puts the next turn on the bars. Same arrow, different failure mode.

Decision 2: can you read it at noon?
A computer you cannot read is one you stop looking at, so check brightness before features. It is quoted in nits — one nit is one candela per square metre — and the number only means something with a reference: ordinary computer monitors run about 200 to 300 nits, which is why a laptop is useless on a patio. Handlebar devices have to beat direct summer sun, so ratings run far higher. Decision 3: the mount is half of what you are buying
Riders shop the screen and inherit the mount, then spend a season annoyed by it. Three things decide whether a mount is any good: how positively it locks, how fast it comes off at a coffee stop, and whether you can add a second base for your other bike. The NAV 1 uses a Twist-Lock system with a dual-tab interface — a quarter turn locks it down, a quarter turn back releases it — and ships with two mounts: a bicycle mount, and an ACC direct-power mount for a motorcycle that charges the unit as you ride. Buy for your longest ride of the year, not your Tuesday commute. The NAV 1 carries a 600 mAh battery rated for about 6 to 8 hours of active use and charges over a magnetic USB connector. For a commute or a club ride, that is plenty. For a century at a 15 mph average — close to seven hours of moving time before stops — it is near the line. For a 200 km brevet, which Randonneurs USA allows 13 hours 30 minutes to finish, it is not enough on its own. Two honest answers to that, and neither is "our battery is fine": carry a pocket power bank and the magnetic USB cable, or buy a different class of device. The powered ACC mount in the box only helps on a motorcycle — a bicycle has no ignition circuit to feed it. Wahoo rates the ELEMNT BOLT 3 at up to 20 hours, and Garmin quotes up to 36 hours in battery-saver mode for the Edge 550 — those numbers exist because ultra-distance riders will not stop to charge.

Decision 5: sensors — only if you actually train
This is where people overspend, and it is the easiest to settle. Power meters, heart-rate straps and cadence pods talk over ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy. ANT+ exists so a strap from one brand and a head unit from another work together, and one sensor can broadcast to several displays at once. Ride to a power target or follow structured intervals and that ecosystem is not optional.

What it records is speed, mileage, altitude and trip duration, stored in the phone app for review afterwards — ride logging, not training analysis. What the rider feedback shows
Most of the rider feedback we track comes from the motorcycle side, but two complaints in it travel over to bicycles. The first is what handlebar mounting does to a phone: one rider writing about a handlebar phone mount put it this way — the camera "went out on my Android phone… the Quadlock slowed down the inevitable, and I don't want to kill another $1,200 phone." Milder on a bicycle, but the logic holds — a sealed unit is a cheaper thing to expose to rain and grit than the phone you need for the ride home. The second shows up in complaints about third-party CarPlay and dashboard screens: riders describe colours that are "shockingly bad, way too vibrant". That is why decision two is on the list.
